Most Ablenook houses are quite small and are built to be hurricane-resistant. They can, however, be expanded with additional modules, to be used as a permanent dwelling, office, or an emergency shelter. For almost 40 years, American Ingenuity Domes has been manufacturing high-quality geodesic dome kits – made from prefabricated panels – used to construct modular homes and commercial centers. These prefab geodesic domes feature a fire-resistant, concrete exterior surface that can provide adequate protection against hurricanes, tornadoes, etc. Modular prefabricated homes are those that were manufactured in an indoor factory, instead of being built through traditional, onsite construction.

Building inspectors are sometimes called in to inspect the electrical and propane gas hookups, but trailers do not need to pass a building code for occupation. Mobile homes technically are manufactured homes but are very different when compared to today's manufactured homes. Manufactured homes must abide by a Federal HUD building code. Manufactured houses are pre-constructed completely in the factory on a permanent, fixed steel chassis. Modular homes are typically larger than manufactured homes - they have full kitchens, bathrooms and bedrooms, washer and dryer hookups. Modular homes are placed on a permanent foundation at the building site and often have full basements.
